Delta Air Lines announced a new non-stop daily flight between Mumbai to Atlanta in the US from 1 November 2008.
The new flight will replace Delta's current non-stop flight from Mumbai to New York's JFK airport, a press release issued here stated.
This flight will offer Mumbai's strong business and leisure community the benefit of extensive connections across the US, the Caribbean and Latin America via Delta's Atlanta hub, the release said.
The Delta flight DL 185 will leave Mumbai at 1.05 am and reach Atlanta at 8.30 am while the flight DL 184 will depart Atlanta at 7.15 pm and arrive in Mumbai at 10.35 pm (next day), the release said.
It would be a 17-hour, 55-minute non-stop west-bound flight.
"The size and scope of Delta's operations at our Atlanta hub are best suited for the capacity of the 777-200LR in terms of cargo and passenger lift," Delta's Executive Vice-President-Network and Revenue Management, Glen Hauenstein, said.
"Also, Atlanta will allow us to optimise the route thanks to approximately 150 US destinations with which the Mumbai flight will be able to connect though our Atlanta hub, as well as the over 30 easy connections to Latin America and the Caribbean," he added.
Middle-aged foreigners top tourists’ list
Incredible India is fast becoming a preferred destination for the middle-aged tourists. The latest statistics prepared by the Tourism Ministry states that travellers aged 45 and above constitute 41 per cent of the total tourists visiting the country. As per the Tourism Ministry report, to be published shortly, the number of younger foreign tourists declined 10 per cent during the last 10 years. On the other hand, during the same period, middle-aged and above category of tourists registered an 11 per cent increase. As per the break up, visitors in the age group 45-54 years constitute 19.6 per cent, 55-65 years constitute 13.5 per cent and 65 and above constitute 7 percent of the total number of tourists visiting India.
Europe and the US top the list of middle-aged tourists. South East Asia and East Asia send maximum number of young tourists to the country. And in the under 14 category, it is the UAE and the US that top the list.
Though the purpose of visit in case of 98 per cent foreign tourists is leisure, there are a number of visitors who club travel with education and employment. The maximum number of visitors who came here in 2006-07 for education and employment were from Israel, Yemen and Bahrain.
Whereas the UK continues to be the top source of foreign tourists, one surprise entry is China. For the first time, in 2006-07, China emerged as one of the 15 top tourists generating markets for India, with 1.4 per cent share in the total tourist arrivals. Most Chinese tourists are aged between 25 and 34. On the other hand, the number of tourists from Pakistan shows a negative growth rate of -5.8 per cent.
The foreign tourists arrival in 2006-07 has been highest from West Europe (33.4 percent), followed by South Asia (20.4 per cent). The growth rate is the highest in the case of East Asia, followed by Eastern Europe.
The data reveals there’s not much increase in the number of outbound tourists during the last three years. Singapore is the most favoured destination for Indian tourists, followed by Bahrain and Thailand. While Delhi International Airport tops the chart in terms of tourist arrivals, Mumbai International Airport sends out maximum number of tourists.
Domestic tourism is witnessing a dramatic growth. It registered 17.8 per cent growth in 2006-07, while it was merely 7 per cent in the previous year. The top five states in the domestic tourist visits were Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Rajastan — accounting for 73 per cent of the total domestic tourist visits in the country. On the other hand, it is Delhi that interests the foreign tourists the most, followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. The Taj Mahal continues to be the most visited monument for domestic as well as foreign tourists, the Tourism Ministry report says.

Asked how the airline was managing to carry out expansion plans at a time when high fuel prices have been wreaking havoc in the aviation industry, Foo said "India is very important for the carrier and we do not want short term fluctuations to affect its long term strategies in India".

Pvt carriers not to do ground handling from 2009
In a bid to reduce congestion and overcrowding inside airport terminals, the government has decided not to allow private domestic carriers to undertake handling of baggage at six airports from next year.
The six major airports identified are in those Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, official sources said, adding that private carriers would not be allowed to carry out this task from January 1 next year.
As per the prevailing system, national carriers, entities authorised by the airport operator and private airlines do self-handling.
The Ministry has decided that at these airports, the operator or its joint venture firm, subsidiary companies of the national carrier or its joint venture firms or any other ground handling service provider selected through a competitive bidding process, would be allowed to carry out these services at the airports, they said.
The decision has been taken after complaints regarding lack of space and overcrowding inside the terminals due to a large number of ground handling equipment being positioned on the airside. A large number of personnel are also stationed to man these equipment.
The decision, the sources said, would go a long way in taking care of lack of space on the airside of busy metro airports.

Divya Bhatia, Director of RIFF this year, calls the festival, a larger process of promoting folk art through community participation. “By making clips of the festival and floating them around the globe, will give the folk artists an edge in many aspects,” specifies Bhatia.
The festival will have Shubha Mudgal performing at the opening night. Another highlight, of the festival is the event where two maestros, a folk and a classical artist are playing together. Ustad Sultan Khan, a classical Sarangi player from Jodhpur plays with Lakha Khan, a Manganiyar who is a folk artist.
Ace beat boxer and composer Jason Singh from UK and singer songwriter Bex Mather will perform with Rajasthani folk artists, after exhaustive rounds of practice. Among the other highlights of the festival, is a gypsy band from Hungary. Also, there are Jazz artists from United States and Netherlands who are sharing tunes with the folk artists of Rajasthan. “It is interesting to note that many Gypsy artists trace their background from Rajasthan,” avers Bhatia.
Calling RIFF, a truly international event, Bhatia claims that the festival has artists from Netherlands, France, Hungary, UK and Spain. Artists, like Maand singers, Kawwal from Ajmer Sharif, Sarangi and Pungi players will perform at the event.
“We have 140 folk artists from Rajasthan. Almost 11 distinct communities related to folk art will be part of the festival. Communities, traditionally related to folk, such as Langas, Manganiyars, Kalbeliyas would be in all colours, apart from the Meghwals, who are known for their Nirgun traditions,” elaborates Bhatia.
Calling RIFF, a rare opportunity for the folk artists to get foreign assignments, Bhatia said, this festival would help the Rajasthani artists to get platform in foreign lands such as Netherlands, to perform with the Dutch artists. “This event also provides income to the artists performing at the festival. Their interaction, with foreign artists get them work from abroad, and eventually a new source of income,” Bhatia explains.
What makes this festival a unique destination, for the connoisseurs, is the...
venue of Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, where the festival is being organised. “I think the charm is to see local work in local spectacular setting. It is not like a five star setting. It would be like going to the village,” assures Bhatia....
Rajasthan heritage hotels a big draw with foreign tourists
JAIPUR: Thanks to some thoughtful initiatives by former princely families in Rajasthan almost two decades ago, the palaces, forts, castles and havelis once on the verge of collapse and disintegration are pulsating with life now in the form of heritage hotels. In fact, the heritage hotels have become almost a movement in the country’s tourism sector and their tribe is flourishing.
“We started with 12 members in 1990. Now we are 150 with membership as far and wide as in Kerala and Himachal Pradesh. And there is always a queue for entry into the fold as we don’t take in anyone so easily,” says former Jodhpur ruler Gaj Singh, one of the pioneers of the heritage hotel concept.
“We had taken up with the Centre for a separate categorisation of these properties. Any attempt at standardisation of heritage properties would have amounted to their undoing,” he says.
Enough choice
The heritage concept, tried out first with the palaces and havelis of Rajasthan, has picked up so well that now there are categories within categories and there is enough choice to pick up from. Now there are categories such as “Basic Heritage,” “Heritage Classic” and “Heritage Grand!”
The minimum requirement for entry into the group is a property of vintage going back to 1935 or more and a minimum of ten rooms along with basic amenities.
Rajasthan leads the heritage caravan with 90 hotels, which include the celebrated Lalgarh Palace in Bikaner, Rajmahal Palace in Jaipur — a favourite of the late movie mughal Raj Kapoor — Samode Palace near Jaipur, Neemrana Fort Palace, Sariska Palace, Ajit Bhawan in Jodhpur, and Connaught House in Mount Abu. The well-known heritage hotels outside Rajasthan include Usha Kiran Palace, Gwalior; Hari Niwas Palace, Jammu Tawi; The Judge’s Court, Kangra; and the Palace, Wankaner.
Just how is it going now after 17 long years of coming into existence?
“The going is good. The heritage hotels have done well. They are a big draw with foreign tourists though domestic tourists also patronise them,” says Gaj Singh, now the president of the Indian Heritage Hotels Association (IHHA).
“We had a lot of problems initially. It is easier to get loans for construction of a new hotel than to renovate an old palace or haveli for converting it into a heritage hotel,” Mr. Gaj Singh reveals.
“Heritage properties deserve a preferential treatment as most of them are located in rural areas. They promote rural employment, village crafts, traditional music and art, besides tremendously improving the basic tourism infrastructure in deep interiors,” Mr. Gaj Singh adds.
“Today you can travel anywhere in Rajasthan and find decent accommodation even in the interiors,” points out Randhir Vikram Singh, another pioneer of the movement and joint secretary of IHHA.
Potential
“There is potential for further growth and new rooms can be added provided finances are forthcoming along with some tax concessions. We have our own peculiar problems when it comes to taxation and bar licences,” he observes.
One of the demands made at the just-concluded annual general body meeting of the IHHA here was for a uniform taxation policy for heritage properties all over the country.

Founded in the first half of the 18th century, Jaipur is also famous for its remarkable town planning.
One thing that attracts the foreigners most is the planning of the city that is so beautiful. About 300 years back how the king had planned the city; now in modern cities you never find city like Jaipur, said tour escort, Dilip Singh.
Maharaja Jai Singh II founded Jaipur in 1727 as the first planned city of India. The King took great interest while designing this city of victory. He consulted several books on architecture and architects before making the layout of Jaipur.
Following the principles of 'Shilpa Shastra', the principles of Indian architecture, the city was divided into nine blocks, out of which two consist of state buildings and majestic palaces, whereas the remaining seven blocks were allotted to the public.
In order to ensure the security, huge fortification walls were made along with seven strong gates.
